The death of Sri Varkala Radhakrishnan in a road accident is sad news not just to his beloved ones and political supporters, but to the citizens of Trivandrum as well because this veteran politician was perhaps one of the loudest and most forceful campaigners for the development of the city and the district. His strident voice and formidable authority will be missed by one and all.

Even when he was the MP of Chirayankeezhu, and not of Trivandrum City itself, Varkala campaigned for development issues including the Vizhinjam port, railway development and the High Court Bench. He got a lot of attention by the unique action of organising a Dharna before Parliament for the Vizhinjam project.

It can't fail to be noticed that even though Varkala managed to yank along our former MP, legendary for his reclusiveness, not even one of Kerala's 18 other Lok Sabha MP joined them to press for Kerala's "dream project." It was his courage and determination in campaigning for the Capital City that set Com. Varkala apart from almost all of his peers! In my few interactions with him, I have found him to be almost like a loud but affectionate and intelligent grand-father for all of Trivandrum. Always concerned, and never afraid to call a spade, a spade!
You will be missed, Comrade.
Kerala politics loses one more of those dwindling folk of trustworthy politicians
